Cross-country skiing
Jämtland’s climate and landscape are ideal for this activity.
We have plenty of snow but it is usually not too cold. On top of that the terrain varies between hilly, flat and mountainous – forest, frozen lakes and open tundra. Because almost everyone here loves to ski, a wide range of tracks and back-country routes is available. Here is a small selection:
- starting right in front of our doorstep across the snowy lake to one of its islands
- starting in our village or close by on one of the local tracks through forest and across lakes
- Östersund and its ski station is the is the biathlon and cross-country centre of Sweden. There are 90km of world-class tracks for classic and skating style to choose from!
- A one-hour drive takes us to all the possibilities the ”fjäll”, the mountains, have to offer: The fjäll has wellmaintained tracks and is the starting point for longer adventures. We can spend the night in a tent or in one of the cabins in the mountains.
From the time Stefan spent in Canada’s Yukon Territory with sled dogs he brought home his passion for skijoring – that is skate-skiing with help of a sled dog. If you are an experienced cross-country skier in the skating style you can try skijoring, . but be warned – this may lead to addiction and the urge to permanently move up north!

- Cross country ski poles and boots. If you don’t bring your own you can rent this gear for a fee in Östersund or in one of the ski places in the mountains.
- ski pass for the chosen track system, if applicable
- costs for a cabin or room rental on an overnight trip
